Cameraless Film - Working with Film Celluloid

Cameraless Film - Working with Film Celluloid

In the beginning of my third year in college, I enrolled in a course, taught by Shai Heredia, the founder of 'Experimenta', an experimental film festival.  In this course we learned how to manipulate film celluloid, by painting, scratching, bleaching the emulsion off, to be able to project the images through the 16mm projector onto a screen. We worked with a clear leader, black leader and found footage. Understanding the technicalities of using a film projector helped us understand the materiality of film and unlike the digital format, it is a tangible medium.

In my film, Foliage, I have stuck pieces of plants, flowers, and grass with tape onto the film. the process if tedious and delicate but eventually rewarding when the images are magnified on the screen through the projector, revealing the structure of the leaves to their details. It is an interaction with light as the primary source and the chosen material to play with that light.
The later part of the footage is worked on found footage, punched holes, scratched of emulsion and cellophane sheets stuck on the celluloid.

In the second film, Chasing Chickens, I worked with the black leader and scraped the emulsion off, to create a frame by frame animation pertaining to the metamorphosis of one object to another.
